A GUIDE TO PLAYING “THE BEST BALL GAME”

Background
Unilever Ghana hosts an Invitational tournament annually at the Achimota Golf Club to provide a platform for keeping fit, business networking and socialising for the company’s key business contacts and senior managers. At the 2009 tournament, the ‘Best Ball’ form of play was introduced to the competition. Feedback from participants indicated that the play format was enjoyable. However, the lack of a good appreciation of the format led to some avoidable delays and frustration among the players.

This guide is therefore intended to set out the rules, regulations and principles that govern the “Best Ball format”, and thereby enable participants in the tournament to enjoy it thoroughly.

Rules & Regulations

Pairing
1. Players must play in pairs
2. Ideally, a pair of players must have the same or similar handicap.
3. Where there is a difference in handicap, the difference of any pair of players must not exceed 4 points. This is to ensure that the more experienced players are not unduly favoured.
4. The handicap of the pair is derived by adding the two individual handicaps and then dividing the total handicap by two. The derived handicap becomes the handicap for both players.

Play
1. A pair of players will tee off their individual balls at Hole 1. Subsequently, they will select the ‘best’ of the two balls and play that ball alternately till the end of the game.
2. Tee off will begin at 7.00am prompt with two pairs of players at Holes 1 and 10 simultaneously, and will subsequently occur at 10 minutes interval at both holes. The last set of two pairs of players will tee off at 9.00am.
3. Players who tee off at Hole 1 will play through to Hole 18, while those who begin at Hole 10 will play through to Hole 18 and then play the back 9 from Hole 1 to Hole 9.

Scores
1. The pair of players will record their common score

Conclusion
• To facilitate a smooth tournament, all competitors will be advised of their co-player and tee off time via the Club’s notice board / website / personal note from Unilever Ghana at least a week to the tournament.
• All competitors must endeavour to report at least one hour before their indicated tee off time to complete joining formalities in good time to tee off at their allocated time.

The keenly contested Cal Bank Golf tournament, played at the Achimota Golf Club (AGC) on Saturday the 12th of September 2009, saw as many as 36 groups of four golfers teeing off. Tee off time was a early as 6 am prompt with the last group teeing off at 11. 30 a.m. A few people who were late were smacked with 2 strokes penalty by the Laud Ayikwei who has been assisting the competition Secretary Nana Bema Tackie in her duties.

At the end of the day, Ms. Elizabeth Aku Yaba and K. Degbe with the advantage of ‘local knowledge’ finished in 1st place for the women’s and men’s category respectively. Aku Yaba who has played on the Achimota course for over 11 years could not hide her contentment for clinching the much coveted trophy for the 2nd time. Aku plays to a handicap of 17 but will now play to a new handicap of 16 after returning a net of 68 Aku was followed by Mona Captan and Margaret Anderson who returned a not of 71 and 73 respectively.

Degbe returning 8 under par ie 64 net was dumbfounded at his brilliant performance and when receiving his trophy unconsciously said ‘I am confused’. Degbe an aspiring professional has been playing golf for the past 5 years and has played single digit (since) for sometime. When giving his prize, the Managing Director of Cal Bank Mr. Frank Adu, who is a passionate golfer could not help but throw the champion a challenge to a stiff 18 hole contest before the close of the week.
The runner up was H.R. Na with 69 net score beating 2 others on count back.
These are Ron Pickings & C. Apau-Opong. Dr. Paul Owusu-Baah took the 5th position.

The group ‘9 holers’ was led by Bea Heinel who returned a net of 34.

The Juniors were not left out they also played 18 holes. Young Emma Quarshie an emerging star was the winner with 66 net. The 1st and 2nd runner ups were B. Logo (71 Net) and Yaw Dogbe (71 Net).
As part of the package Cal Bank living up to their social responsibilities, presented a cheque of GH¢10,000.00 to the Captain of the Club Mr. Mike Aggrey, towards the rehabilitation works for the 75th Anniversary celebrations. The presentation was done by the Managing Director Mr. Frank Adu Jnr. supported by Mrs. Leonora Kyeremateng, a Board Member. Mr. Adu Jnr. announced to the gathering, Cal Banks plans to float shares within the month and entreated the golfers to buy some of the shares especially those who have been taking money from him when they beat him in golf.

The Captain Mike Aggrey thanked the Management the Board of Cal Bank on behalf of the Council of AGC assuring the Bank that the money shall be put to good use.

Look out for more news next week after the Coca Cola monthly medal.

Premier golf club Achimota is to have a GH¢250,00 two terrace club house with changing rooms, cocktail bar, restaurant, open terrace and other modern facilities to befit the club which marks its 75th anniversary in October this year. A sod cutting ceremony to mark commencement of refurbishing works of the project was performed last Wednesday at the fore-court of the club house by Capt. (Rtd.) K.A. Butah, chairman of the Diamond Jubilee planning committee and Vice President of Achimota golf club.

The project is to be funded by the club with Netlynk, a construction firm, providing technical support. Captain of the club, Mike Aggrey, in an introductory speech said the refurbishing project has become necessary to cap 75 years of the club's achievement and give a fitting face lift of the status of Ghana's most celebrated golf club.

He said he and his committee were optimistic that the climax of the Diamond jubilee celebration on October 25 would be held at the club's “new premises” with his Excellency President JEA Mills as the Guest of Honour.
